Goddesses of destiny

oil on canvas 110 x 160 cm (44 x64 in.) 1999
This is a theme from ancient Greek mythology and it carries a philosophical statement by the artist on the fragile nature of life. The three monumental figures at the centre of this painting are the daughters of Zevs and Themis. Clotho (right) spins the thread of life, while Lahesis (in the centre) assigns destinies, and Atropos (left) timely cuts the thread. The figures below on a raft represent different times, thought an inevitable end applies to each. The raft carrying the figures, and the sacrificial lamb, symbolise the fleeting nature of life.
